why "trace"?

Trace Foundation's name embodies many rich meanings.

To trace is to redraw a picture using the original lines. . In our approach to social and economic development, we conserve the valuable assets of local communities. As the ability of these communities to meet their own needs grows, we draw a new picture for the future that builds on existing strengths and customs.

A trace is an imprint. Trace Foundation takes a people-centered approach to development. As an international organization, we are an impermanent part of the local landscape. While the trace we leave may not always be visible to the eye, it makes a lasting imprint through the ongoing efforts of local people.

Tracing means to make a path. Rather than duplicate the work undertaken by local government and social services organizations, Trace seeks to complement this work by building new paths for international cooperation that can reach areas where there is continuing need.

The trace is where mathematical planes intersect. With staff from all over the globe working closely together in New York and Tibetan areas of China, Trace embodies this dynamic coming together of worlds. Drawing from our diverse experiences, we seek innovative yet culturally appropriate solutions to the unique challenges facing Tibetans in China.
